John Kulback is an industry-leading dealmaker and trusted advisor providing strategic counsel to clients across the evolving landscape of entertainment, media and technology.
John’s clients include feature film financiers, television production companies and digital creators across all aspects of financing, development, production and distribution. He also has significant experience advising media technology, artificial intelligence and celebrity-backed consumer product companies as they scale from early stage into sophisticated corporate and commercial partnerships.
With nearly two decades in high-profile positions—ranging from outside counsel to executive to operator—John has worked closely with clients, colleagues and investors to capitalize on business opportunities and respond to industry tailwinds. John brings extensive experience not only in closing transformative deals, but also in helping clients navigate the challenges that arise when market dynamics evolve and new strategic initiatives emerge.
Prior to joining Loeb, John was an executive at the blockchain technology company founded by Tom Brady and Rich Rosenblatt, funded by a16z, Kleiner Perkins and Lightspeed and with a board that included industry leaders such as Eddy Cue, Chris Dixon and Michael Meldman. In this role, John led dealmaking for over 40 multi-year partnerships with platinum global brands and public figures—including the NBA, ESPN/Disney, Lionsgate, Universal Music Group/Republic Records and AEG, as well as The Weeknd, Tiger Woods, Simone Biles and Rafael Nadal. Concurrently, John was responsible for the company’s day-to-day operations, overseeing cross-functional teams of 40-50 people across nine departments to launch core products on seven-day sprint cycles.
At VICE Media, following the $450 million investment from TPG, John led global dealmaking initiatives across scripted film and television, documentaries and podcasts. He closed the $14 million Sundance sale of the film The Report to Amazon Studios, the co-financing of Harmony Korine’s film The Beach Bum with Anonymous Content and NEON, a multimillion-dollar documentary financing fund with Verizon, and content deals with Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Spotify.
During his tenure at 20th Century Fox, John served as the lead lawyer on Fox’s feature films with James Cameron (including the Avatar sequels), and on the studio’s first distribution deal with Google and Searchlight’s acquisition of the documentary He Named Me Malala about Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. John also led dealmaking efforts for Fox’s virtual and augmented reality initiatives at the Fox Innovation Lab.
John’s strategic advisory work has included counseling an ultra-high net worth family office on eight- and nine-figure growth equity investments in the media/tech and media/consumer sectors. He also has partnered closely with CEOs and C-suite executives to align organizational purpose, vision and mission with capital strategy, performance metrics and commercial partnerships.
John maintains a broad network of business leaders, executives, innovators and creatives. He is the founder of several long-running industry working groups and has curated communities focused on fostering learning relationships and building bridges between creative storytellers and technologists.
